Given the value of high-quality performance reviews to develop leaders on the job, J. Larry Tyler, FACHE, FHFMA, CMPE, and Andrew N. Garman, Psy.D., M.S., embarked on a one-year research project. Goal was to develop a job-relevant multisource (360-degree) feedback survey that would be available to the health administration profession. By multisource, we mean soliciting feedback from a leader’s boss, peers and subordinates. With the assistance of dozens of leadership assessment and development professionals, as well as incumbents at all organizational levels, a competency framework was developed and tested. The framework includes 26 competencies arranged according to seven clusters. These competencies were then populated with behavioral descriptors to create a survey consisting of 128 total items that, when matrixed across four relationship types, create surveys ranging from 36 to 95 items in length. These surveys can form a stable foundation on which to assess healthcare executives and help them grow professionally.
